Yan Jun is a central figure of experimental music in Beijing, making a return visit to northern California. Blurring boundaries between electroacoustic improvisation, noise, movement, everyday object installations, and poetry, Yan performs regularly in the underground experimental scene in Beijing while making frequent international appearances in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. As stated in his bio: “he tries to make music simple and primal. He plays in a noise-doom band and world-improvisation band while his solo sets employ plastic bags, tinfoil, slippers, feedback, screaming and concepts.” Always responsive to the environments in which he performs, he says "I wish I was a piece of field recording."
Active with many collaborations, Yan also organizes events and runs the label Subjam, publishing works of experimental music and sound art from China and abroad since the early 2000s. In 2017 we partnered as 23five inc. with the Chinese Culture Center in San Francisco where Yan played solo and in duo with then-local Gabby Wen. Prior to the existence of Re:Sound, he performed in San Francisco via 23five as well. We are happy to welcome him back now for a solo set in Vallejo.
